The nineteen nocturnes of Chopin were inspired by earlier examples from John Field. Chopin’s own nocturnes are essays in elegance, ranging in mood from perfect tranquility to agitated despondency. This music has always sounded to me like a stream of fond memories interrupted at the last moment by a startling loneliness from which there is no attempt to recover.
